National Archives Registration Photo
Website URL: (http://www.archives.gov/historical-docs/todays-doc/index.html?dod-date=1008)
This website is hosted and run by the National Archives and Records Administration. The head of this governmental administration is David S. Ferriero, appointed by President George W. Bush on November 6, 2009. In addition to this website the Administration also puts out a quarterly magazine. Although I was not able to find the last time the website had been updated, I was able to see that the last time they had a Press Release which was on November 30, 2012. With this information I believe that the website has been updated within the last week. The design and layout is user friendly and clean. There is no clutter and it is easy to see the information you are trying to seek.
There are a few reasons why this is a great tool for a student or a curious mind. Firstly, it gives a very brief summary of who Alvin C. York is and what happened during World War 1 that lead to him getting a Medal of Honor. Secondly, it is a very credible source seeing as how it is run by a Governmental Administration. It also seems updated very often, giving visitors up to date information. Lastly, the ability to be able to see Alvin C. York’s registration card makes the reader feel more connected to his history.
However, there was one navigational error, in my opinion. When you come to this page in order to see the registration card, you must click on a link underneath the brief history. Once you’ve clicked and you’re on a new page it doesn’t just show Alvin C. York’s registration card, it shows quite a few others. For a student, it could make this source a little more challenging. In regards to the curious mind, this could be seen as a plus because it could spark their interest into looking into another historical person’s story.
Overall, I would recommend this website. It is a fantastic tool to give any paper, presentation, or other academic activity an added sense of authenticity. The website is clean, easy to use, and it has the great potential to help a student on further projects.

Texas State University News Article
Website URL:(http://www.txstate.edu/news/news_releases/external_news/2006/03/wwIherofound032006.html)
The host of this website is Texas State University in San Marcos. However the information on the page was not made by someone working at Texas State University, the news article was actually from Middle Tennessee State University school newspaper. The Article chronicles a doctoral Student who uses geography to verify Alvin C. York’s hotly debated topic of where his Medal of Honor event took place. The article was printed in 2006, but scrolling down you will see a section titled, “About Alvin Cullum York”. The page is mostly words which could intimidate some from reading about it, but the article is well written and intertwines modern technology and 87 year old history. Once again, I find no plain written out date of the last time the website has been updated. Similar to the first source they do have a section on their website regarding news releases. This has news releases as recent as November 2012.
What makes this a good source for students are a couple things. Firstly, there is an attractive aspect of how modern day science affirms and continues to look into Alvin C. York’s history. It makes the story of him seem rejuvenated and new almost because there is current research being done about him - there is still much to learn about him. Secondly, it gives a more extensive biography of York’s life allowing the reader to learn more about him.
The weaknesses of this website is how wordy it is. There are no pictures of York or any other photos relating to the article. This could potentially push the reader away from actually reading the article. The other issue I have with this website is they don’t make it easy on the reader to go directly to the article. You have to go to Middle Tennessee State University’s website and search for it in order to come to it.
Regardless of the drawbacks I still recommend this website. It requires more effort by the reader, but it also gives the reader an opportunity to see how research on Alvin C. York is still relevant. Plus, once you do find the article, you get the PDF of the actual newspaper print which helps to add credibility to this article.

Sergeant Alvin C. York National Park
Website URL: (http://www.tn.gov/environment/parks/SgtYork/)
This website is administrated by Tennessee State Parks (through the state government.) There is no clear indication of when it was last updated, however there is a portion on the front page discussing events in 2012 at the park itself leading me to believe it has been updated at least within the last year. This website is directed to give information on people interested in visiting the state park. Under the sub section “Historic Park” there is a brief synopsis of who Alvin C. York is and why he is important. The layout is nice and clean, however I wish there was navigation links at the top instead of sections down the front page along with some navigational tools on the right hand side.
This is a great tool for someone who is geographically near the state park, or someone who is planning on making the trip out there to gain more knowledge of Alvin C. York. The historical park gives visitors the chance to see his home, his grave, as well as personal artifacts and wartime mementos. This gives the visitor an intimate look at Alvin C. York and his life. The other interesting part of visiting the state park is that if you notify ahead of time you can talk to York’s son, Andrew York. There is also the matter of the brief synopsis about Andrew York that also makes this website attractive to students as well as other interested parties.
What I would change, as mentioned above, is the layout. I think that this website has great information and opportunities, it just needs an aesthetic lift. Moving the navigation to the top would make it even more user friendly and to break up the sub sections into their own page would make a huge difference for this website. It would also be nice if they elaborated more on a separate tab concerning the life of Alvin C. York.
Keeping in mind that the main focus of this website is to give information to those wanting to visit the state park, it is still a great source of information. If I were to be in the vicinity of the national park myself, I would definitely visit to be able to have a more hands on learning experience in regards to Alvin C. York’s life. There is also still a brief summary of his life on the website that is helpful to anyone looking to learn more about Sergeant York.

Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation
Website URL: (http://www.sgtyork.org/)
The website is hosted by the Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation. Their mission, as stated on their website, is as follows, “‘Legacy in Action’... The Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Sergeant Alvin C. York, the greatest hero of World War I.” The foundation also has a link to a blog of which they update with the latest events that they are hosting. As far as when the last time this website had been updated, I was unable to find a specific date. There are also no indications, aside from the blog, that can give me a time frame of when the website was last modified. The website layout is not fantastic, but not terrible either. There are clear concise links in the header that helps the viewer navigate throughout the website easily.
That being said there are a couple reasons why I choose this website as a tool for students and history buffs. Firstly, the website has multimedia facets to it, allowing the reader to see photos of Alvin C. York, documents, and videos. The video that I saw off this website is exceptionally great because it is an actual news taping of when Alvin C. York died and the video included actual footage of him as well as clips of him speaking to the camera. My favorite part of this website is that you can order Alvin C. York’s diary. That is absolutely fantastic for a student doing an academic paper or presentation on him because that is a primary source of his life. This is also a great primary source regarding any academic exercises concerning World War 1. Plus for the history buff, it doesn’t get much better then being able to relieve his life through his own words.
What hinders this website from being a superb source is the lack of information regarding the website itself. They give you information about who they are and how to reach them, but not so much about the website. If they would keep an up to date activity log of the website then this could be considered the best Alvin C. York educational website. Then of course we come to the layout, it just needs some minor tweaks here in there, such as better chosen background that doesn’t clash and blend into the header.
I would recommend this website because it is so diverse when it comes to the resources it offers. At times the website can be wordy and hard to get through, but in the end it is worth it and you come out more informed because of it.

Official U.S. Army Video About Alvin C. York
Website URL: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GntoM1uoCN0)
This is a Youtube link which can be seen as not the best source, but before you skip it you should know that the video comes from the United States Army. Meaning the content posted is backed by the United States government, and specifically the military branch. The last time they uploaded a video was 1 year ago, which still keeps the source up to date. The video is about Alvin C. York in regards to his service in the army. The video is 1 minute (59 seconds to be exact) long giving a brief history.
The best part of this source, of course, is that it is a video representation of history. There is also a smaller summary in the description of the video which indicates more information regarding Alvin C. York. The video is interesting and to the point making it a great destination for all concerned.
Though it is nice that the video only is 1 minute long, it also is a hindrance. If it were longer then there would be more information to learn, which would make it all that much better.
I would absolutely recommend this to anyone interested or studying Alvin C. York to check this video out. I would tell that person to start their research here, because it would give that person a great overview on his military history. What also makes this site so fantastic is that the content source is the United States Army and their channel on youtube allows someone working on other war related topics an opportunity to find a video on their subject. It is also very credible and is a nice alternative to reading a long page of text. Plus in regards to a project, this video is quick, clear, and to the point making it an excellent presentation aid.
